Maya and the Lantern That Fell From the Moon
Maya lay on a striped beach towel with her toes dug into the cool sand, counting stars through her grandpa's old brass telescope. The waves hushed in and out like slow breathing, and the Big Dipper glittered right where she'd left it the night before. She was just finding Orion's belt when something silver wobbled loose from the sky and came tumbling down, end over end, the way a leaf falls when it finally lets go of its branch.
It landed with a soft plink far out past the waves: a lantern, round as a moon-pebble, glowing gold even underwater. Then a small, worried voice came rippling up through the surf. "That's the Moon's night-lantern," it said. "Without it lit, the tides forget their rhythm and the stars can't find their places." A sea-dragon no bigger than a dolphin poked her head above the water, scales shining like wet sapphires. "I felt you counting stars from way out here, Maya. I think you're exactly who the ocean needs tonight."
